What is SYME?

Dream Bigger. Grow Deeper. SYME.

SYME is a ministry of Word of Life Fellowship, Inc., a Protestant Christian organization based in New York.

At SYME, students experience total English immersion—learning English life skills and studying the Bible entirely in English. It’s like having an American cultural and spiritual experience, right here in Japan!

Students speak English for 11 hours a day, four days a week, creating an intensive learning environment that promotes rapid language growth and deep spiritual development.

SYME is more than just a language school—it’s also a discipleship training center designed to equip Japanese young people for their future, whether in ministry, further education, or serving in their local churches.

English

English Immersion at SYME

At SYME, students commit to speaking only English for 11 hours a day, four days a week. To boost confidence and create a true immersion environment, each student chooses an English name. If a student speaks Japanese or any other language during this time, they contribute a small fine of 100 yen—encouraging consistent English practice.

All SYME teachers are native English speakers, and classes are organized in small groups based on each student’s proficiency level. Our program goes beyond traditional language lessons by focusing on writing, reading, listening, and pronunciation—while also teaching practical phrases, idioms, and everyday expressions through natural, casual conversations with teachers and peers.

This immersive, communicative approach equips students for real-world situations—whether at work, in their home church, or studying abroad—providing a strong foundation to confidently embrace their future.

Bible

Grow Stronger in Your Faith at SYME

At SYME, weekly Bible studies cover a variety of topics designed to help you grow as a Christian. Each morning, through theme-based quiet time, students learn the importance of daily Bible reading and are encouraged to develop this life-changing habit.

Four times a week during chapel, students experience vibrant praise sessions, testimony sharing, scripture memorization, skits, and inspiring messages—all aimed at helping them engage deeply with God’s Word.

Sample themes include: Temptation, Forgiveness, The Power of the Tongue, Self-Image, and more.

In Bible class, we dive into the Gospel of John, the Acts of the Apostles, and an overview of the entire Bible. These studies build a solid foundation, deepen understanding, and show students how Scripture relates directly to their lives—helping them apply biblical truths in everyday situations.

(Themes and Bible class topics may vary.)

Life

Life at SYME: More Than Just Academics

SYME is about more than just classroom learning. Each term, students enjoy school trips to explore local sights, creating unforgettable memories through fun activities and shared experiences.

Most students live together in dormitories, where life away from home teaches important lessons in responsibility and community. Living with others encourages respect for rules, thoughtfulness, self-discipline, and accountability—both for homework and dorm duties.

Through daily interactions with classmates and staff, students develop cooperation, teamwork, and leadership skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of themselves—their strengths and areas for growth. Along the way, they experience moments of encouragement, joy, laughter, and even challenges, all of which foster strong bonds.

Though students arrive as strangers, they leave as family. At SYME, friendships are formed that last a lifetime.

A Day at SYME

*Schedules may vary by semester or week.

9:20-9:50am
Quiet Time

Each day at SYME begins with Quiet Time, a personal devotional time shared by both students and staff. Everyone reads the same Bible passage—usually connected to the week’s chapel theme—and takes time to reflect by writing down their observations and personal applications.

This daily habit helps students grow spiritually, develop consistency in their walk with God, and learn how to apply Scripture to their everyday lives.

10:00am-12:50pm
English/Bible Class

Classes at SYME are 50 minutes long and offer a well-rounded mix of subjects. Students participate in Bible classes, English language classes, and focused sessions on reading, writing, and pronunciation.

This balanced approach helps students grow both spiritually and academically.

(Class schedules and content may vary depending on the term.)

1:00pm-1:50pm
Lunch

Our staff put care and creativity into preparing delicious dishes from around the world, giving students a taste of global flavors. Mealtimes are also a great opportunity for students to practice speaking English in a relaxed, friendly setting—making conversations as enriching as the food!

2:00pm-2:50pm
Chapel

Chapel is held Tuesday through Friday, with each week centered around a specific spiritual theme. Students not only attend but actively participate in making chapel meaningful and engaging.

Both students and staff take on various roles, such as MC, worship leader, skit performer, testimony sharer, or translator for messages and testimonies. This hands-on involvement helps develop confidence, leadership, and teamwork.

Each chapel includes prayer, worship songs, testimonies or skits, Scripture memory, and a biblical message. During the message, students are encouraged to reflect and apply what they’ve heard by discussing thought-provoking questions with a partner—helping them connect truth to real life.

3:00-3:30
Family Time

From Wednesday to Friday, students gather in small groups for Family Time—a special opportunity to connect more personally with staff and each other. Male students meet with male staff, and female students with female staff, to share insights from their morning Quiet Time readings.

This relaxed setting allows students to ask questions, discuss biblical truths, and sing together, creating a supportive environment for spiritual growth and deeper relationships.

3:45-5:45
Ministry Classes/Encounter

During Ministry Classes, students learn and practice key ministry skills such as evangelism, children’s ministry, leadership, and discipleship. They also work together to prepare for Bible Club—a team-based activity where students plan engaging programs that include games, group discussions, and presentations based on specific themes.

Encounter is a separate time set aside for students to enjoy fellowship, study the Bible, and have fun—all in Japanese. It's a great opportunity to deepen friendships and apply biblical truths in a relaxed, interactive setting.

Activities during both Ministry Classes and Encounter vary depending on the semester and day of the week, making each experience unique and meaningful.

6:00pm-6:50pm
Dinner

Each evening, students enjoy a delicious, home-cooked dinner prepared by our caring staff. Mealtimes are not just about food—they’re about connection.

After dinner, students often gather to play card games, chat, and relax together, building friendships and making memories in a warm, family-like atmosphere.

7:00pm-8:30pm
Study Hour

Study Hour is a dedicated time each day for students to focus on completing the homework assigned in class. It’s a quiet environment designed to help you concentrate—but it’s also a great opportunity to ask teachers questions and deepen your understanding of both English and the Bible.

While the goal is focused, independent work, how you use this time is up to you—take ownership of your learning and make it meaningful!

10:00pm-
In Dorms

“In Dorms” means all students are required to be inside their dormitories by a designated time.

  • Monday through Friday: 10:00 PM

  • Saturday and Sunday: 11:00 PM (for students living in SYME housing)

This policy helps ensure students get adequate rest and maintain a healthy routine during the week.

11:00pm
Lights Out

“Lights Out” is a time for rest and quiet, helping students stay healthy and ready for each day. During this time, the following rules apply:

  1. All students must be inside their dorms

  2. All lights must be turned off

  3. The dorms must be quiet—no talking

  4. Everyone must be in their own bed

  5. No use of electronic devices (including phones, computers, MP3 players, etc.)

Lights Out Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday: 11:00 PM

  • Saturday and Sunday: 12:00 AM

This routine supports a restful environment and encourages good habits for both body and mind.

*SYME class schedule is different every term and this is just an example.

Stories of Alumni

Keita “Jonah” Hoshino/Class of 2008-2009

A Youth Pastor in Takada Bible Church

I have a lot of reasons why I am thankful that I studied at SYME, but if I had to choose just one thing, I would say how God led me to dedicate my life to Him and become a pastor. I grew up as a pastor’s kid, but I didn’t want to be a pastor. I casually decided to go to SYME, thinking, “Maybe, I will study the Bible. I hope I will be able to speak English.” At SYME, we learn different themes each week. One week, the theme was the “Life of Christ.” That theme was not special to me since I grew up in the church, but trying to learn it in my poor English made me have a new perspective. During that week in chapel, we heard a message from John 17 about Jesus’ prayer before He was crucified. The Messenger said, “Jesus came to the world not only to save us, but also to live, pray and leave an example for us”. These words hit me in my heart. When I understood that Jesus had lived His whole life for me and prayed for me, I was overwhelmed with joy that I had never felt before and I cried. Through this, I decided to dedicate my life and I started asking, “How can I serve You, Lord?” in my prayers. Two weeks later God answered me through Youth Ministry class. We learned about the aging of pastors in Japan and the need of the Gospel for the next generation, and that became a burden in my heart and I was sure that God was leading me into youth ministry. After seven years of study, God has given me a place to engage in youth ministry that I had been praying for. I am thankful to God Who lets me both to will and to work for His good purpose through SYME.

Hitomi “Tammy” (Ohtsuba) Kobayashi/Class of 2011-2012

An Office Worker

“I didn’t want to take TOEFL, but I wanted to go to an international environment.” That’s what I thought as a high schooler. It was a time when I was struggling to figure out what to do in my future. By the way, I was born and raised in Papua New Guinea as a missionary kid and started living in Japan at the age of eight. After high school, my first choice for studying abroad was the USA. That was my initial plan. However, TOEFL seemed like a great big wall that I just couldn’t climb. I became very disappointed with myself for struggling with language, especially because I was raised internationally. More than with language though, you can say that I was struggling with pride.

When my struggle was at a peak point, I was talking with my oldest brother and he said to me, “Hey, life doesn’t always go as planned, so why not let things be?” After our conversation I prayed to God, “Lord, where do you want me to go? Lead me there.” I think it was only a few days after I prayed that I found out about SYME. I knew at once that it was the place for me. Having my parents’ approval and being confident that God was leading me there, I applied to SYME.

The school life at SYME was great. It was way much more than I can describe and summarize here, but I will do my best and share two precious things that God gave me through SYME. One was a heart to seek more of Christ and two, friends to share the same heart with. I was raised by Christian parents and have believed in Jesus since I was little. Studying the Bible in English at SYME made my love for Him grow. I also came to realize how valuable friends, who share the same love and passion for Him are. So, a huge thanks to SYME, for providing me a place to receive God’s great gifts!

To be honest, I am still learning to let God take the lead of my life. When I feel like I have to find my way in my own strength, this is one of the verses from the Bible that gives me guidance.

“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” – Proverbs 16:9

Q: What are the typical ages of SYME students?

A: Students range in age, from 16 to over 60 years old. If you are a high school graduate (or have a high school equivalency certificate), you are welcome. However, students over age 30 will be asked to arrange their own housing.

Q. How long is the SYME program? Can I go for a short time?
